Tennis: Nishikori pulls out of Sydney exhibition to rest
World No. 5 Kei Nishikori of Japan pulled out of an exhibition on Monday a day after suffering a minor injury in the final of the Brisbane International.
Nishikori had been due to play in an exhibition tournament starting on Monday, but felt pain in his left glutes during Sunday's 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 loss in Brisbane to Grigor Dimitrov. Nishikori said he didn't think the injury would affect his performance in the Australian Open starting next Monday.
"There is still pain," he said at an event in Sydney. "I'll rest two or three days and then resume practice. I am unable to play at 100 percent, and there is concern over (aggravating) the injury."
After pulling even in the second set against Dimitrov, Nishikori called for medical treatment. Nishikori missed two weeks in October after feeling pain in his left glutes at the Japan Open.
"It's something I've had before," he said.
